Hello All....
I'm a GrandPa with 10 grand children, hence the name.....
I've always been fascinated by magic since I was 5 years old, when I saw my first show at a VFW hall in Kalamazoo, Mich. Growing up I read every book I could find on the subject. Around 10 years old or so I discovered Harry Houdini and he became my hero. Again I read everything I could find on him and his magic. I did my first public performance at age 12 for a senior citizens club my dad used to deliver bakery goods to. My next performance, along with a few friends was for our 8th grade talent show at school.
As life went on, I sort of strayed from performing, but never lost that love for it. Fast forward about 30+ years....my daughter asked me if I could perform magic for her 4 year old daughter's (my grand daughter) birthday party. My daughter knew I was into magic and had come across my "box-o-tricks" many a time as she grew up. How could I say no?! So I put together a routine and my daughter even bought me a REAL "magician's hat" so I could pull something out of it for her :o) The show went well, the kids LOVED it! Now my little grand daughter, Gabby, is hooked on magic too.
Since doing that show, I was re-bitten by the bug. I began to advertise and started to get enough bookings for kids parties that I quit a 2nd job I had making pizza. I am currently making more money than I was at the pizza joint!
I never thought I would be making money from magic, and now here I am as a Semi-Pro Magician :o)
Paul "Grampy" Mateer
BTW - Grampy actually comes from Grumpy Grandpa. I was trying to quit smoking and my grand daughter, McKendize called me that. I no longer smoke, and am no longer grumpy, but I liked Grampy so it kinda stuck....
